Stop Walking In Darkness

22 Abstain from every form of evil. ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:22ESV

Tonight, millions of people will dress up and go out to celebrate Halloween. Many of those people will be self-proclaimed Christians. They’ll say things like, “I just like dressing up,” “We don’t do the horror and gore,” or “Well, we celebrate Christmas and Easter, and they both started as Pagan holidays.” We’ll go to great lengths to defend celebrating Halloween, but not to great lengths to research what they’re celebrating. See, you can’t change the foundation of something without first getting rid of everything that it’s built on. What am I getting at? You can’t just say you’re not participating in the core of the holiday if you’re participating in part of the holiday.

It’s equivalent to people saying they’re celebrating Christmas, but not the birth of Christ. Or Easter but not the Resurrection of Christ. Christmas and Easter’s origins are both in Christianity, not Paganism. There are no recorded Holidays celebrating either of these dates prior to Christianity. This isn’t true with Halloween, however. Halloween’s origin is rooted in darkness. It’s rooted in pagan rituals and demonic activity. There’s no light in this holiday, not even the lightened modern-day version. So, what do Christians have to do with it?

14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, 18 and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.”

2 Corinthians 6:14-18ESV

19 What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.

1 Corinthians 10:19-21ESV

There is light, and there is darkness. We are children of the Light, not of the darkness.

3 While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. 5 For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. 6 So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.

1 Thessalonians 5:3-6ESV

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Stop Walking In Darkness.
