Lulled To Sleep

22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. ~ James 1:22-24ESV

So many of us in the Church today were raised in church from childhood. We’ve heard the Bible our entire lives, and to many of us, it’s lulled us to sleep. We’ve forgotten that love we had at first. We’ve gotten so used to grace that we’ve forgotten the price that was paid. We’ve forgotten how much God has done for us and in us.

When we go to church, it’s no longer about growing in Spirit and Truth; it’s become about a religious ritual that we believe will get us into Heaven. The message begins to fall on deaf ears, and we stop growing, becoming complacent we forget who we once were. But it’s not too late to awaken your sleeping spirit. It’s not too late to melt your heart of stone. God has already paid your debt; all you have to do is repent.

Dear LORD God, please forgive me for taking Your Word for granted and for taking advantage of Your grace. Please replace my heart of stone with a heart of flesh and renew a right spirit within me. Awaken my sleeping spirit that I might know You and who You created me to be. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, amen.

Beware of Complacency

How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, 11 and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man. ~ Proverbs 6:9-11

When we stop desiring the things of God, and we stop seeking Him, we become complacent in our walk with God. When we become complacent with God, we stop moving forward. If we aren’t running the race set before us, then we’ll never reach the finish line. We’ll never find our Promised Land. We’ll fall asleep right where we stand and eventually die of hunger and thirst.

This is where a lot of us are. We’ve slowly stopped reading our Bible. We’ve slowly stopped praying. We’ve slowly become distant from God without even realizing it. We don’t have forever to get it right. We only have today; tomorrow is promised to no one. We have to constantly check our spiritual temperature lest we fall asleep, allowing poverty and want to sneak up on us like an armed robber.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Beware of Complacency.

Be Aware of His Presence

10 Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. 12 And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! 13 And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. 14 Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” 16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” ~ Genesis 28:10-17

The LORD was with Jacob, but Jacob had no idea God was with him that He was. The LORD had to give Jacob a dream so that he understood that he was in the presence of God Almighty. This is how we are. We understand God is within us, but we don’t know His presence the way we should. We can walk into a room and never realize the presence of Almighty God is in that place, just waiting for His people to enter into His presence and see miracles.

It’s in His presence that miracles take place, that salvation and forgiveness are given, and freedom dwells. Yet even seasoned Christians miss the presence of God Almighty. And in doing so, we miss blessings and miracles. Therefore, wake up and take notice. Take notice of the presence of the LORD. Take notice of what He is doing in your life and those around you. Take notice of all His promises and all of His characteristics.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Be Aware of His Presence.

Inspect The Work

42 So the people of Israel followed all of the LORD’s instructions to Moses. 43 Then Moses inspected all their work. When he found it had been done just as the Lord had commanded him, he blessed them. ~ Exodus 39:42-43

Moses didn’t just take the people’s word for it; he went and inspected all they had done to make sure that it met the standards the LORD God had set for them. He didn’t let anything be subpar, or make excuses for the people of Israel, so why do we today? We make so many excuses for fellow Christians that don’t reach the standards of God Almighty.

We’ve become so afraid to offend the world that we’ve lulled ourselves into a spiritual sleep that we can’t even differentiate between good and evil anymore. We no longer even know what the instructions of the LORD God are. We’ve lost sight of who God created us to be. We’ve lost sight of the mark that He has set for us to reach.

But it’s not too late to wake up. It’s not too late to aim for the mark. We can still wake up and run the race that has been set out before us. All you have to do is pray this prayer.

Dear LORD, please awaken the sleeping spirit within me. Replace my heart of stone with a heart of flesh that my heart might break for what breaks Yours. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit that I might be able to live a life holy and pleasing to You. Lead me in the path of righteousness for the sake of Your name, that all may see the change in me and give You glory and honor. Teach me, LORD, to love You the way You deserve. Teach me to love people the way You love me, that I might not fear the world, but that I might win souls for You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

Prepare For His Return

11 I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown. ~ Revelation 3:11

Jesus mentions the phrase, “I am coming soon,” four times in the book of Revelation. Apparently, the Number four (4) is used as a symbol of honesty and loyalty, which means that the words spoken by Jesus are trustworthy. You can depend on what He said.

There are many, many prophecies of the first coming of Jesus. It was fulfilled over 2000 years ago when Jesus was born in “Migdal Eder,” wrapped in swaddling cloths, and laid in the manger.

Now, Jesus, Himself is prophesying that He will return soon. He repeats the exact phrase 4 times; the number, as I said, is connected with honesty and loyalty. This can only mean one thing; we had better mark His words. We had better prepare for His second coming because if He came the first time to die, how much more will He come back for us to live?

So, wake up. Don’t be caught asleep when Jesus returns. Don’t be caught unaware or unprepared for Jesus’ return. Hold tightly to the crown that has been given to you and continue to spread the good news of Christ Jesus.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Prepare For His Return.

Listen to His Nudge

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. ~ Galatians 4:4-5

God didn’t wait until the last minute to send His Son into the world. He didn’t wait until it was almost too late. It was at the fullness of time that God gave the entire world hope. And we celebrate God’s gift of hope every Christmas.

Imagine if God waited. Imagine the lives that could’ve been lost. Imagine the people that wouldn’t’ve heard the good news. We all have a call on our lives, but if we aren’t awake and alert, paying attention to the times and to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we could miss our opportunity to share that hope with someone. The hope of eternal life. The hope of salvation. The hope of Jesus.

Don’t let all the bright shiny lights of the world null you to sleep. Wake up and pay attention to the subtle nudge of the Holy Spirit. He’s our guide, and if He could lead the wise men and the shepherds to be in the right place at the right time, then He can nudge and lead you.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Listen to His Nudge.

Follow in God’s Footsteps

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. ~ Proverbs 22:6

In today’s world, so many young people are growing up without true role models. Their role models are celebrities, athletes, and other people who are far off and don’t know their names. I challenge you this Christmas to take the time out and mentor someone as God took the time to mentor you.

God could’ve left us on our own. He could’ve left us in our own filth and ignorance, but out of His own love for us, He set aside everything and became man. He took the form of an innocent baby, and every year at Christmas, we take the time to remember and celebrate His first sacrifice. We celebrate Him becoming our greatest mentor.

None of us were born knowing Christ; we all had to learn. We all had to be taught. We all had to be mentored.

Statics say that:

    • 55% of young adults with a mentor are less likely than their peers to skip a day of school
    • 78% – more likely to volunteer regularly
    • 90% – are interested in becoming a mentor themselves
    • 130% – are more likely to hold leadership positions

So many of us have become spiritually lazy and spiritually asleep that we don’t even see the impact that we could make in our own community. This Christmas, think about becoming a mentor. Don’t just give a physical gift and call it a day. Give something that is priceless, your time and knowledge of Christ. Let the tradition of self-sacrificing for the sake of another continue.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Follow in God’s Footsteps.

Pay Attention

17 I set watchmen over you, saying, ‘Pay attention to the sound of the trumpet!’ But they said, ‘We will not pay attention.’ ~ Jeremiah 6:17

Those who will not pay attention will meet a dreadful end. The trumpet has sounded. The clarion call is announced. Repent and believe. Jesus is coming back real soon. We must keep watching and praying. We must have our house in order that when Jesus comes back, He will find us doing what we are supposed to be doing.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Pay Attention.

Pay Attention To The Times

The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. ~ 1 Peter 4:7

We must be vigilant. We are to keep our eyes open. We are commanded to watch and pray for the end of all things is at hand. We are living in a time of darkness. Christianity, Christians, and Jesus are under attack. Our beliefs are rendered antiquated and politically incorrect at best. If you notice, Christianity is the only religion whose beliefs and practices are belittled and whose deity is blasphemed daily.

It is a time of darkness with the whole world battling an unseen elusive enemy. Shutdowns and shut-ups. Shortages and scarcities. Lack and needs are going unfulfilled. Panic everywhere. We have to wake up. We can’t stay asleep any longer, the night is coming to an end, and the Son will soon break the Eastern sky to carry His bride away. When He comes, we can’t be asleep with the rest of the world, numb to the trials and tribulations surrounding His people. He’s coming soon; watchman, do you know what time of night it is?

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Pay Attention To The Times.

Don’t Sleep On The Job

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality. ~ 1 Corinthians 6:9

The Church has to wake up and stop being influenced by the world and begin to be motivated by the Truth. The Word of God is Truth. We don’t have a whole lot of time left to influence our loved ones, our friends, our neighbors, our coworkers. Time is running out. The end is speeding up and soon will come like a flood. So with all sincerity and love, I beseech you don’t waste the time you have left sleeping on the job. Take the little bit of time that we do have left and use it wisely.

If we are to win souls, we must win them with the Truth, and we must start now. There’s no time for us to water down, sugar coat, cherry-pick, or change Scripture. Today is the day of salvation; tomorrow is promised to no one. Today is the day to win souls because tomorrow might be too late.

Don’t allow the world to pervert the things of God. He has drawn a line in the sand between right and wrong. Don’t allow your flesh to keep you from witnessing, or even worse, keeping yourself away from salvation. Wake up and look around; the end is very near. It’s no longer something far off; it’s now something knocking at our door.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Don’t Sleep On The Job.
