One of the most well-known stories of Jesus’ ministry is His encounter with The Rich Young Ruler. But like many other stories, we don’t really understand the importance of this story. Nor do we understand what the story really means. Join ArieRashelle as she searches through Scripture to fully understand the importance of the encounter with The Rich Young Ruler.

Mark’s Account of The Rich Young Ruler
17 And as He was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before Him and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” 20 And he said to Him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” 21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

Luke’s Account of The Rich Young Ruler
18 And a ruler asked Him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 23 But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.
Luke 18:18-23
The Summary
Jesus didn’t say He wasn’t God, He was giving the rich young ruler a chance to confess who He is. But the rich young ruler missed it because he was blinded by the old covenant where man’s goodness was based on his actions. Jesus then tells him to sell everything he has and give it to the poor so that he can have treasure in Heaven, instead of on Earth. Then Jesus tells the young man to follow Him so that he might be saved.
