The Tongue’s Power

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. ~ Proverbs 18:21

The tongue has the power to speak life or to speak death. That’s a very frightening thought, if you think about it, that our tongues hold that much power. I want you to stop and think about what I just said for just a moment. Our words are life, and they are death, and people throw words around as if they count for very little or for nothing.

People will let words like:

  • I will never succeed
  • I can’t do anything right
  • I will never make friends
  • I am a born loser
  • I will never get over this sickness
  • This is killing me

Just roll off their tongue as if it was water on a duck’s back, so to speak, without us even thinking about it. Listen, you don’t have to know it in order to speak it into being.

Words are alive because they are breath, which is spirit. Therefore, words will never die. That’s why the words of our prayers can come up before God as a memorial years after they have been spoken.

That’s also why the prayers of:

  • The saints long dead
  • Grandmothers
  • Grandfathers
  • Parents
  • Holy men and women of God

Will come to pass eventually because they are words that were spoken.

On the flip side, that is the same reason why curses, also known as generational curses, can plague generation after generation after generation because words have the power of life or death, and if they are life or death, that means they do not die, but they can be canceled.

Dear LORD, please forgive me for every careless word I’ve spoken about myself or other people. Please cancel each and every curse I’ve spoken, whether out of anger or idle talk, in the mighty name of Jesus. Please let life be the words I speak out of my mouth instead of death. Let my words be holy and pleasing to You, LORD God. Bridle my tongue. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

Combat With Humility

6 But He gives greater grace. Therefore He says: God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. ~ James 4:6CSB

Shame enters us when we dwell in sin and are conscious of it. To combat this shame ourselves, we become prideful. We try to justify our own sin and force others to accept and affirm it as well. If anyone protests or disagrees, that shame (fueled by pride) comes to the surface and gives birth to anger.

Pride is not the opposite of shame, but its source. True humility is the only antidote to shame.

Uncle Iroh

Only when we humble ourselves before the LORD will our sins be washed clean and the power of shame broken within us. Pride gives shame its power, but humility uproots shame and destroys it. Shame cannot stand when we dwell in the perfect love of God that can only be accessed through humbling ourselves before our God.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Combat With Humility.

Uproot And Destroy

3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made everything he did successful, 4 Joseph found favor with his master and became his personal attendant. Potiphar also put him in charge of his household and placed all that he owned under his authority. ~ Genesis 39:3-4CSB

Joseph was sold as a slave by his own brothers to Ishmaelite traders. They went on to sell him to Potiphar, an Egyptian. Joseph could have easily been bitter and refused to work. We would have understood. His own flesh and blood, his big brothers who were supposed to protect him and love him, sold him into slavery. He could’ve mumbled and grumbled at God for allowing this to happen to him when all he did was share the dreams God had given him with his brothers. Joseph didn’t do that, though.

There’s no account of Joseph lashing out at his brothers for selling him or to God for allowing it to happen. There’s no account of Joseph being bitter and allowing it to stop him from achieving whatever he set out to do. Because of this, the LORD blessed all that Joseph did. God’s hand on Joseph was so noticeable that Potiphar promoted Joseph from lowly slave to his personal assistant, putting him in charge of everything he owned, including his home.

The Devil will try to use people closest to us to try to break us down. He’ll have older siblings that you look up to and just want approval from to discourage you and break you down with their words. He’ll use a parent’s busy schedule or misunderstanding of a situation to break you down. All of this with the hope that a root of bitterness will rise up in you and keep you from fulfilling your destiny.

But here’s the thing, only you can stop your destiny from coming to fruition. No one else. So, take a page out of Joseph’s book and keep your trust in the God who sees you. The God who is with you always. If you continue on and refuse to let bitterness build up in you, then the LORD will bless you regardless of what land you’re currently in.

Dear LORD, please teach me not to grow the root of bitterness within me. Help me to uproot and destroy any tree of bitterness that has already made its way into my heart. Help me to forgive those that I feel have wronged me. Help me to let go of past hurts and pains. Teach me to move forward and cling to Your promises and good plans for me above all else. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

One Hour

36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and He said to His disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” 39 And going a little farther He fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And He said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, He went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” 43 And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, He went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. 45 Then He came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.” ~ (Matthew 26:36-46)

Have you ever been woken up earlier than usual and gotten the feeling that maybe you should pray, but slumber is pulling you back, so you shake off the feeling and give into a few more hours of precious sleep? That’s how I’ve felt these last couple of days, especially, but this morning something changed. Right after I got this feeling, a thought entered my mind:

Arie, what are you going to do when you stand before me, and I ask you why you never prayed when I woke you up?

To say the least, I woke up immediately and started praying. What a frightful thought to stand before the LORD God and have fallen short. No, we’re never going to reach perfection on this earth, but there are things that many of us don’t do that we can do. The majority of us, myself included, struggle with praying for more than 30 minutes straight when Jesus made 1 hour the minimum. Many of us struggle with reading our Bible every day or setting and sticking to a time to worship every day.

These are some of the bare minimum that Christ is asking of us. He gave us everything and still pours out blessings upon blessings, some of which we don’t even realize He’s given us, yet we struggle to give Him an hour of our time a day. Why He loves us so, I’ll never know, but thank the LORD that He does.

Dear LORD, I’m sorry for all the times I’ve given You less than my best. I’m sorry for all the times I chose something else over You. Please forgive me for each time I’ve fallen short of Your bare minimum requirement of me. Please help me to crucify my flesh every day and to feed and nourish my spirit-man so that I might be able to give You more than just the bare minimum, but my absolute best. Thank You for never giving up on me, and for giving me chance after chance after chance, especially when I don’t deserve it. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

Not Another Thought

34 Then Jacob gave bread and lentil stew to Esau; he ate, drank, got up, and went away. So Esau despised his birthright. ~ Genesis 25:34CSB

Esau came in from these fields, and he was famished. Jacob was cooking down a nice-smelling lentil stew. Feeling his belly growl, Esau went over to ask for a bowl, but Jacob said not until you sell me your birthright. Esau replied, “What good is a birthright to when I’m about to die from starvation.” Jacob said swear to me, and Esau did.

Now look at what the text says, “He ate, drank, got up, and went away.” He got up and went away. Never giving another thought to his birthright nor to the consequences of his decision. Because he sold his birthright so cheaply, without a thought or regret, because he held so little value for his birthright, so he was considered to have despised what was rightfully his. Then, when it came to the blessing, he sought it with tears, but to no avail.

The same is true of our birthright, the new birth, the one Jesus purchased with His own blood. When we despise salvation by our words, our actions, or even in our thoughts, we despise our birthright.

One day soon, Jesus is coming back to get us, and if we are found to have despised our birthright, although we seek it with tears, it will be too late. The time is now, the opportunity is here for us to be like Jacob, who saw the value of the birthright and sought it with all his heart, and he received both the birthright and the blessing.

Dear Heavenly Father, I humble myself before You to receive all that You have for me. Help me never to despise my birthright, nor snub my blessings, nor downplay Your importance in my life. Please forgive me for all the times that I did, consciously and subconsciously. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

The Nephilim Pt. 4: On The Earth Before and After The Flood

The Nephilim are one of the most discussed beings in the Bible. They almost seem to appear out of nowhere, causing much speculation on their origins from both believers and nonbelievers. Though the popular belief is that the Nephilim were the offspring of angels and women, the Bible describes a much different origin. The Nephilim were on the earth in those days and after those days. They were on the earth because they originally came from under the earth. If they came from under the earth, how did they get on the earth? The Nephilim

The Biblical Account of the Nephilim

The Nephilim On The Earth Before The Flood

1 When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

Genesis 6:1-4

The Nephilim On The Earth After The Flood

30 But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” 32 So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

Uproot And Plant

10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. ~ Matthew 3:10

The Pharisees and Sadducees were all in the Church, so to speak, but they did not obey the LORD Jesus’ commandments. Therefore, John the Baptist told them that even now, the axe is laid to the root of the trees.

Listen, if you are not bearing good fruit, you will be cut down and thrown into the fire, the eternal fire and torment. And John did not leave it to misinterpretation or misunderstanding by saying fruit. No, he did not. He said good fruit, not just any old fruit.

We have to always honestly self-judge and self-evaluate so that we can be sure we’re bringing good fruit before the LORD. We have to make sure that we are willing to uproot any tree that doesn’t bear good fruit. See, many Christians just want to shave the tree down, but few are actually willing to uproot the entire tree that they might find total freedom.

We let the root of bitterness spring up which causes us troubles and thereby defiles us (Hebrews 12:15). Some people are satisfied to simply shave down some branches, but they never uproot the tree in order to get to the root cause of the problem altogether. In other words, the problem never gets rooted out.

I declare to you right now that you cannot live any old way you want. You cannot continue to live in sin and debauchery and expect the LORD Jesus to overlook your blatant disrespect and rebellion. God will only accept good fruit, so plant good seed. Water it. Nurture it. And uproot all trees that bear bad fruit.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Uproot and Plant.

Follow The Way

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” ~ John 14:6

I heard a pastor say that we need to be more Holy Spirit-centered and less Christ-centered. He explained that the gifts are the gifts of the Spirit, not the gifts of Jesus, so therefore, if we want the gifts of the Spirit, we have to be Holy Spirit-filled. Here’s the thing, though: nothing is done in the name of the Spirit.

We have authority in Jesus’ name. We pray and receive in Jesus’ name. We enter the throne room of God because Jesus went first and made a way. We are saved by Christ. The Holy Spirit may be the source of the gift, but access to that source only comes through Jesus. Therefore, to be anything but Christ-centered would be to fall short. Without our focus being on Christ, then we can’t walk in step with the Spirit. We are the body of Christ. The body follows the head. The Spirit is what helps the body fulfill the head’s instructions.

Christ is our center. Christ is our head. Christ is our everything. Never let new teachings change your focus. If you want to see the power of the Holy Spirit move in your life, then keep your focus on Christ. For Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Follow The Way.

Break Generational Curses

You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. ~ Exodus 20:4-6

Stanley Yelnats family has a generational curse. The curse went from generation to generation to generation. Even the story of the origin of the curse was passed down, but no one ever tried to send the curse. The curse was finally broken by the great great great grandson of the man who brought the curse upon his family. He didn’t even do it intentionally, but because he knew the past, he was able to make a better future.

See, many of us have generational curses passed down to us from no fault of our own. These generational curses keep us from wholly fulfilling the will of God because they keep us trapped in one place in our lives or another. We can see certain strongholds afflict generation after generation in certain families. One plagued with alcoholism, another with fear, and another with homelessness and poverty, another with the inability to finish anything. Generational Curses are passed down from generation to generation through the mindset of its victims.

Breaking generational curses starts with the acknowledgment and identifying of them. Some are broken with just repentance, while others may take intense fasting and praying to break. One thing is the same in each situation, every stronghold can be broken, and every open door can be closed in Jesus’ name.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Break Generational Curses.

In the Wilderness

80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel. ~ Luke 1:80

This is speaking of John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus the Promised Messiah. The Scriptures say that he was in the wilderness before his public appearance to Israel. You know who else was in the wilderness before His public appearance to Israel? Jesus.

Luke 4:1-2 says,

1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, He was hungry.

If you notice, before their public ministry, many of the Old Testament heroes spent time in the wilderness. John the Baptist, Jesus, Moses, and Jacob were in the wilderness taking care of his father-in-law’s sheep, Joseph spent time in the prison, and the list goes on. But in the New Testament, the heroes spent time with Jesus.

Acts 4:13 says,

13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.

Even the great evangelist Paul spent time alone with Jesus before his public ministry. While writing to the Galatians, he described himself as still being largely unknown to the churches in Judea after three years.

But Acts 11:25-26 says,

25 So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch.

So, what am saying? The truth and seriousness of the return of Christ is still looming large right in front of us. We don’t have a whole lot of time left to mess around. We must be about the Father’s business. So, this year, determine to spend some time in the wilderness with Jesus, in prayer, fasting, and studying the Scriptures. It is the only way you will grow and the only way to really get to know the one who died for you and is coming back to get you. You don’t want to be a stranger to Him when He comes back in all of His glory. Be sure to set aside time to be alone with the LORD in this coming New Year.

Heavenly Father, thank You that I can spend time alone with You and that You want to be alone with me. There is no greater privilege than spending time with You, the one who purchased my salvation. Now, please help me to serve You with my full heart and with all of my strength; in Jesus’ mighty name, I pray, amen.
