Defy Culture

5 Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it. 6 When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” 8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.” ~ Exodus 2:5-10ESV

The Devil planned evil for Moses. He sent a Pharaoh that would commit a mass genocide of the Hebrew boys so that they (the Hebrews) would have no deliverer to save them from their slavery. But God had a different plan. God had a will not only for Moses but for all of the people of Israel. His will was that they might be saved. If Moses’ mother had not had faith to hide her baby boy and defy the Egyptians, Moses would not have been saved, and the Hebrews would not have had a deliverer.

Today, there is a mass consensus that the Word of the LORD is hate speech. That if we speak truth, we are speaking hate. The fear of man has overtaken us, and we’ve lost the fear of God. Instead of preaching life and truth, we preach death and lies that we might fit into the world. If we defy culture and stand with God’s word, we will see a change in our culture. We’ll see a shift in the atmosphere as Paul, Peter, and all the other apostles saw. Fear over faith will only keep the world a slave to sin, but faith over fear will free many from chains and bondage.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Defy Culture.

Reveal Yourself To God

8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” ~ Genesis 3:8-10

Adam and Eve lived what one could only describe as the perfect life. There was no pain, no suffering, no hurt, no disease, no death. They had everything they could ever want or need, yet it wasn’t enough. Eve’s eye caught sight of what she couldn’t have, and that forbidden fruit looked better than any other fruit given to them by God Himself. When she and Adam ate of the forbidden fruit, they gave birth to shame and fear. We’re no different today.

When we allow temptation to overcome us, it invites fear and shame into our lives that then take root in our lives. So when the Spirit of God comes looking for us, and we hear His voice, we run and hide from Him. Sometimes, we allow shame and fear to take hold of us so that we never reveal ourselves to God. So that we don’t go to Him for forgiveness and we remain in our sin.

When we allow fear and shame to take over, we give into the lie that God doesn’t love us. See, God doesn’t take pleasure in punishing us, even when we deserve it. God only wants God things for us because He loves us. He even gave Himself for us so that we might live and not die. Don’t allow fear and shame to keep you from the forgiveness Christ already paid for. We weren’t given a Spirit of Fear, so don’t allow that spirit to keep you from what God has given you, life.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Reveal Yourself To God.

Speak to the Wind

23 And when He was entered into a ship, His disciples followed Him. 24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but He was asleep. 25 And His disciples came to Him, and awoke Him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. 26 And He saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then He arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. 27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him! ~ Matthew 8:23-27KJV

Jesus and His disciples were in the ship crossing over to the other side. Now, we’re not sure if all twelve of the disciples were present or not, but we know the fishermen were present. The seasoned seamen, yet they were afraid. So, this wasn’t just any storm; this must’ve been a terrifying storm to have the seasoned fishermen cry out to Jesus, saying that they were perishing.

Now, when He helps them by calming the storm, they marvel. They could hardly believe what they had just seen. Maybe it took them by surprise because they weren’t expecting that. Maybe they were expecting Jesus to grab a bucket or pan and start bailing out water. Or grab an oar and start rowing.

Whatever they were expecting, it certainly didn’t seem to be Him speaking to the storm and the storm obeying Him. They weren’t ready for this level of power and authority. They weren’t expecting to see the miraculous. When His disciples saw that, they were completely and totally amazed. So much so that they exclaimed in amazement, in unison, “What Manner of Man is This?”

Today, we’re in the same boat. We’re seasoned Christians. We’ve been serving the LORD for years upon years, yet when a storm hits us (even a huge storm threatening to sink the ship), we become fearful and forget who is in the ship with us. It wasn’t that the disciples didn’t know who Jesus was. It wasn’t that the disciples had never heard that Jesus was the Messiah; that’s why they were following Him. When the winds and the waves began to roar, and the ship seemed as if it was going to sink, their faith began to sink in the midst of the storm.

Life isn’t always going to be sunshine and light rain. Sometimes life throws us storms that threaten to overcome and sink everything that we have. Sometimes this includes our own lives, but that doesn’t mean that we allow fear to replace our faith. Just as the disciples weren’t alone on the ship, we aren’t alone in life. God Himself abides in us. The power of God flows through us. The creator of the wind, waves, and our ship is right with us. And if we allow Him, He will calm the storm for us; all we have to do is speak to it with the authority given to us in His name. Peace. Love. Go Forth and Speak to the Wind.

The God of Time

He waited seven days, the time appointed by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him. So Saul said, “Bring the burnt offering here to me, and the peace offerings.” And he offered the burnt offering. 10 As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came. And Saul went out to meet him and greet him. 11 Samuel said, “What have you done?” And Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines had mustered at Michmash, 12 I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of the Lord.’ So I forced myself, and offered the burnt offering.” 13 And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which He commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.” ~ 1 Samuel 13:8-11

Saul’s lack of faith in the LORD and in the man of God led to Saul becoming impatient and destroying his future and his children’s future. Samuel gave Saul a set time to wait for him, but when Samuel didn’t show up at the exact time Saul expected him, Saul began to panic and took matters into his own hands. He allowed his fear of the enemy and the lack of time to overtake him. Today we are no different.

Some of us are given a call or promise from God that we feel should come in a certain amount of time, and when it doesn’t, we begin to panic and try to force it to come sooner or come through closed doors that we force open. The fear of missing our opportunity can lead us to not only miss our opportunity but endanger our children’s future as well. We can’t allow the fear of running out of time to keep us from following God’s perfect timeline. God isn’t slow to fulfilling promises as we count slowness; instead, He is always on time, bringing things to fruition at the perfect time.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Have Faith in the God of Time.

Embrace the Love of God

24 Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.” ~ 1 Samuel 15:24

Saul was a beloved king chosen by God Himself to be the first king of His chosen people, yet Saul feared the people. He was a great leader that the LORD had shown His grace and love upon, yet for Saul, it wasn’t enough. From the moment Saul was chosen by the LORD, he responded with self-doubt that he wasn’t good enough. This led to the need to be loved and accepted by the people of Israel regardless of whether or not he was dwelling in the will of God. This was because he feared being rejected by the people and risked being rejected by God.

This is how we are today. We are so afraid of being rejected by society that we push away the love and grace of God. The spirit of rejection is one of the most dangerous spirits that can take root in us because the spirit of rejection breeds fear in us. When we are filled with fear, we can’t please God because we have a lack of faith and love in God. The only way to overcome the spirit of fear is to embrace the love of God. Only in the love of God does fear disappear, and faith begins to grow.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Embrace The Love of God.

Don’t Be Silent

17 But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name. ~ Acts 4:17

Whenever they tried to stunt the growth of Christianity, they tried to silence the Church. Why? Because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. How can they believe if they have never heard? So, what does the world do?

They try to stop us from discussing religion. How? They’ve hushed us up in the schools, they’ve hushed us up in the workplace, they’ve hushed us up in government, in our malls, in our stores we can’t even say Merry Christmas because it’s politically incorrect to do so.

People often say that God doesn’t need us, so why does this matter? Paul poses this question; How can they hear if no one tells them? Sounds to me like God intended for us to be His mouthpiece. Jesus did His part. It’s our turn now.

How then can we be silent? God wants the whole world to know the way to salvation, and it’s through our preaching and our teaching. There is no other plan. None. So, don’t let them silence you; you are called to preach the good news. How would you be saved right now if someone hadn’t taught you the way of holiness? It’s time for the Church to arise and stop being intimidated and shamed into being silent while our friends, our family, and our coworkers are going to an eternity of punishment.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Don’t Be Silent.

Speak Up

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. ~ Proverb 31:8–9NIV

There are many injustices in the world today. A mother can murder her baby in her womb, and the world shouts women’s rights. Children are sex trafficked all over the world, and we turn a blind eye because who can really do anything to save them? People are enslaved. The poor are exploited. Widows, orphans, and the fatherless are all forgotten and thrown aside by society, but is this the desire or will of God?

One small voice can easily become a roaring sea of many voices. All it takes is one pebble (one person) to create a ripple in the sea (society). The Devil knows this, so he fills your head with lies that you could never do anything to change the world and strikes fear into your heart that you will be silenced and/or rejected for speaking out. The lies of the enemy only come in like a flood because he knows that one person can change the entire world. He knows that one voice can change the entire course of history.

So, be brave and courageous. Stand strong on and in the love of God and know that He is with you. Know that there is nothing that is impossible for those who believe and have God on their side. Walk in faith and not in fear, for you weren’t given a spirit of fear but of love, power, and a sound mind.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Speak Up.

Follow The Untamed Lion

1 Then the whole community began weeping aloud, and they cried all night. Their voices rose in a great chorus of protest against Moses and Aaron. “If only we had died in Egypt, or even here in the wilderness!” they complained. “Why is the Lord taking us to this country only to have us die in battle? Our wives and our little ones will be carried off as plunder! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return to Egypt?” Then they plotted among themselves, “Let’s choose a new leader and go back to Egypt!” ~ Numbers 14:1-4NLT

In one of the last scenes of the movie Narnia defines Jesus as good but not a tame lion. Our God isn’t tame. He’s the roaring Lion of the Tribe of Judah. He’s the God who got off of His Throne and died for His children. His plan for His own life wasn’t tame, so why would His plans for ours be any different?

This is where we get confused. We believe because God is good, only good things will happen when we follow Him; we forget that the ruler of this world is wicked and there is no good in him. Therefore the plans God has for us are good, but they aren’t tame. They’re filled with battles and wars that we have to fight for our souls and the souls of our loved ones.

This is where fear kicks in. Fear is the opposite of faith and love. And without faith and love, we can’t be with God. So, fear will show you the battle before us and the battle behind us so that we don’t see the lion that is with us. It’s easy for us to feel alone and scared when we have an army standing against us as a giant yells at us, but if we stop and remember the lion standing right next to us, fear wouldn’t have any hold on us. This is what the Israelites forgot. They just left Egypt and saw the mighty hand of God, yet they only saw the Nephilim in the Promised Land. Fear gripped them, and they forgot the God whom they served. They forgot their promise.

We each have a promise from God. This promise doesn’t mean we don’t have to fight the enemy. It doesn’t mean it’ll just happen overnight. Having a promise is our insurance from God that if we step forward to fight, He will do all the heavy lifting. He will clear the way for us because He goes before us. We need only have faith in Him and fight. When we stand, fear will laugh at us and mock us. Fear will tell us lies and try to deceive us, but it will go quiet when the lion roars. So stand strong and have faith. It’s not too late to go to war.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Follow The Untamed Lion.

But of Love

18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. ~ 1 John 4:18

We were never created for fear nor in fear. Fear entered the world the moment Adam sinned. We were created in love and for love. Love is our greatest weapon against fear because when we understand the love of God, we understand that we have nothing to fear. So then why is it so hard to not be afraid? Because the enemy knows that if he can get us to be afraid, we stop having faith. And if we stop having faith, then we aren’t dwelling in God’s love. And if we aren’t dwelling in God’s love, then we aren’t saved.

So how do we combat fear? We read our Bibles daily and memorize Scripture so that when we are afraid, we can quote our Scripture. When we pray, we specifically pray about fear and, dare I say, cast out the spirit of fear. For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of love, power, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

LORD God, please strengthen my faith as I read Your Word. Strengthen me in Your love that I might better know who You are. Rebuke the spirit of fear on my behalf in the name of Jesus and set up an impenetrable hedge of protection around me as You once did for Job. Fill my spirit with Your love, power, and sound discernment as You intended me to be. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

Keep Your Peace

39 When Jesus woke up, He rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40 Then He asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” ~ Mark 4:39-40NLT

Fear comes in like a storm pushing against our boat. It tells us that we’re gonna sink. It distracts us with large waves and crashing winds so that we forget that God Himself is in the boat with us. That the commander of the winds and waves is with us, and we have nothing to fear.

So, as the boat is shaking and the waves are threatening to sink you, keep your peace and have faith in the Savior of the world. He isn’t just asleep in the boat with you; He’s given you authority in His name. So, stand firm and speak to the wind and waves around you in faith and confidence in Jesus Christ, your Savior.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Keep Your Peace.
