A “Hallow” Deception

15 I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 18 Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? 19 What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. 22 Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? 23 “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. ~ 1 Corinthians 10:15-23

As Halloween gets closer you see more and more of a division in the Church. One side is shouting we want to celebrate Halloween, while the other says we (the Church) has no business celebrating darkness and Pagan holidays. One side argues that Halloween is just a fun holiday for kids to dress up and get candy, while the other claims that just because you lighten up darkness doesn’t mean it’s not still darkness. But what does the Bible say?

Well, Scripture tells us to not take part in evil. We are told not to follow the pagan world in their practices lest we be led astray. See it’s not what you do claim the celebration means to you, it doesn’t change the true meaning of the celebration. It’s similar to how the Jews today try to change the feasts of God like renaming Yom Teruah to Rosh Hashanah and changing the meaning/observance of The Feast of Weeks (Shavuot). Or how the LGBTQIA+ has claimed the rainbow as their symbol of pride. Just because you say something means a certain thing to you, doesn’t change the actual meaning of that thing. It doesn’t change what it is or what it means/represents.

If you do celebrate Halloween, ask yourself:

Is this helpful to me?
Does it build me up?
Does it bring glory to the LORD?
Am I taking part in Paganism?
Am I trying to eat from both the table of demons and of the LORD?

Darkness is darkness and evil is evil no matter how you try to spin it. Even if you put lipstick on a pig, it will remain a pig. No matter how hard you try, you cannot change the origin of a celebration.

Peace. Love. Go Forth and Do Not Be Beguiled.
