The Rich Young Ruler

One of the most well-known stories of Jesus’ ministry is His encounter with The Rich Young Ruler. But like many other stories, we don’t really understand the importance of this story. Nor do we understand what the story really means. Join ArieRashelle as she searches through Scripture to fully understand the importance of the encounter with The Rich Young Ruler.

More On The Rich Young Ruler

Mark’s Account of The Rich Young Ruler

17 And as He was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before Him and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” 20 And he said to Him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” 21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

Mark 10:17-22

Luke’s Account of The Rich Young Ruler

18 And a ruler asked Him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 23 But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.

Luke 18:18-23

The Summary

Jesus didn’t say He wasn’t God, He was giving the rich young ruler a chance to confess who He is. But the rich young ruler missed it because he was blinded by the old covenant where man’s goodness was based on his actions. Jesus then tells him to sell everything he has and give it to the poor so that he can have treasure in Heaven, instead of on Earth. Then Jesus tells the young man to follow Him so that he might be saved.

How To Be An Overcomer

How To Overcome. Encourage Yourself in the LORD.

In today’s world, we often hear the phrase, once a… always a… For instance, once a cheater, always a cheater. Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. The world loves to label us by our past. Our society today has completely and utterly gotten rid of the hope of overcoming. We no longer teach our children that they can overcome any obstacle, but instead, we teach them that any obstacle can overcome them.

But why? The Devil knows that where hope abides, he can be overcome. So, he stomps hope out before it even has a chance to take root in us. He stuffs our heads with lies, convincing us that we will never be able to overcome our past. That we will never conquer our demons, but is that what God says?

Does God not call us more than conquerors? Didn’t Christ die so that we could live? Isn’t the victory ours in Christ Jesus? If we are conquerors and overcomers in Christ Jesus, then how do we overcome sin? Join ArieRashelle as she searches through Scripture to find the answer in our video, ‘How To Be An Overcomer.’

The Slave

For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Romans 8:3-4

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:1-5; 15

Christ became a slave so that He could make a way for all slaves. We were once slaves to sin, but because Christ overcame sin, we can now overcome sin as well. We can now be more than conquerors through Him.

The Fool

18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

1 Corinthians 1:18

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:37-39

54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55
“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

1 Corinthians 15:54-58

Once, we were fools. We once lived our lives as if God didn’t exist because we were once overcome by sin. We lived our lives according to our own flesh and our own desires; in doing so, we said in our hearts that God does not exist. Our actions stem from what is in our heart, and if our heart is pouring out evil, then our heart says that there is no God.

The Unloved Woman

21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 He has now reconciled in His body of flesh by His death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before Him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

Colossians 1:21-23

And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.

Revelation 21:2, 9-11

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 2:4-7

Once, we were dirty and unloved. Our stench was great before the LORD because of our sin. We were overcome in every aspect of our lives, unable to clean ourselves. No sacrifice was great enough for the LORD to forgive us until Christ came in our very form. He came conquering. He was born with the same weaknesses we were, yet He overcame so that one day we could be washed clean and reconciled to Him.

The Maidservant

17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. 19 I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.

20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:17-23

For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Titus 3:3-7

We were once slaves to sin, fear, and all acts of unrighteousness, but now, we are slaves to righteousness. We are free from the chains of sin that leads to death. Because of God’s love for us and His redeeming blood we are being transformed into His image. We are no longer slaves to sin, but instead we are children of God Most High. We can overcome all things through Him.

What Is Grace?

We often talk about grace but do we really under what grace is. To many people, grace is used interchangeably with mercy or love; and many think because they have this grace, they can live however they want to, and God will just accept them. Definition of Grace

11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession who are zealous for good works.

Titus 2:11-14

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Titus 3:4-7

Where Grace Abounds

20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 5:20-21

12 I thank Him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because He judged me faithful, appointing me to His service, 13 though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14 and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

1 Timothy 1:12-14

How To Receive Grace?

22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Romans 3:22-26

In order to receive grace, you have to first believe and repent. Through faith in Christ Jesus, you will be saved, but once you are saved, you must continue in His love. You have to live your life for Him, following His footsteps and His commands.

The Mercy of God

10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 11 And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. 12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.

Hebrews 8:10-12

14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. 15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, 16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” 17 then He adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” 18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

Hebrews 10:14-18

21 Blessed be the Lord, for He has wondrously shown His steadfast love to me when I was in a besieged city. 22 I had said in my alarm, “I am cut off from your sight.” But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy when I cried to you for help.

Psalms 31:21-22

How To Get Mercy:

25 With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; 26 with the purified you show yourself pure; and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. 27 For you save a humble people, but the haughty eyes you bring down. 28 For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness. 29 For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. 30 This God—His way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; He is a shield for all those who take refuge in Him.

Psalms 18:25-30

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

Matthew 5:7

36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

What Is Love?

We often hear people say something along the lines of, ‘I love God, I don’t need a book to tell me how to love Him,’ whenever they are confronted with how they live their lives. Others will say, ‘God isn’t a God of love,’ as they paint Him as a dictator. The real question here, in both instances, is ‘What is love?’ or better yet, ‘How do you love God?

In today’s world, we have two main versions of God:

      1.  A free-loving hippie that just wants us to be happy
      2. A malevolent dictator just waiting for you to mess up so He can sentence your soul to eternal death

These are usually the two versions of God that we either are raised to believe in or discover later on in life. But are either of these two versions the real version of God? Who exactly is God? Is God a dictator? Is God good? Can God be both our judge and our savior? Is God really love?

16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him. 18 Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

John 3:16-18

43 You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Matthew 5:43-48

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:35-39

Summary

God isn’t a malicious dictator just waiting for us to mess up so He can send us to Hell. God is a God of patience, kindness, gentleness, self-control; why? Because God is love. He took your place on the cross so that one day you would have the chance to repent and be saved. You don’t have to repent. You don’t have to accept His offering. He left the decision up to you because He freely and willingly chose you out of love; now He wants you to willingly and freely choose Him back.

How Do You Become Wise?

Everyone wants to be wise, but does everyone know how to become wise? Is there a special formula for wisdom? How do you become wise? This was such an important question that this is one of the very first things James wrote about.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

James 1:5

Wisdom is the key to understanding God. It is the foundation of our faith. We have to first believe that God exists, but we have to know the attributes of God in order to have faith in Him. What is the foundation of wisdom? Look at what the wisest man who ever lived said about the foundation of wisdom.

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, but what’s next? How do you truly become wise? Do you just ask God for wisdom, and He gives it to you? Are there requirements for wisdom? 6 Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.

Proverbs 6:6

8 The wise of heart will receive commandments, but a babbling fool will come to ruin.

Proverbs 10:8

15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.

Proverbs 12:15

14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.

Proverbs 13:14

It’s not enough just to know Scripture. Anyone can quote Scripture. Atheists, heathens, Pagans, any non-believer can quote Scripture. The Devil himself can and does quote Scripture, wisdom is a lot more than knowing Scripture. True wisdom is living Scripture. It’s following in the footsteps of Jesus. It’s living your life like God is watching every move you make, because He is. To truly have wisdom, one has to do more than talk. They have to lead by example.

What is the Armor of God?

Prayers To Put on The Armor of God

The Armor of God is compiled of six different pieces of armor: The Belt of Truth; The Breastplate of Righteousness; The Gospel of Peace; The Shield of Faith; The Helmet of Salvation; The Sword of the Spirit.

A.G.: The Belt of Truth

16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him. 18 Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

John 3:16-18

13 When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come.

John 16:13

A.G.: Breastplate of Righteousness

1 My son, keep my words and treasure up my commandments with you; keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye; bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.

Proverbs 7:1-3

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Psalms 51:10

A.G.: The Shoes of The Gospel of Peace

26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.

John 14:26-28

33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

John 16:33

A.G.: The Shield of Faith

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

Ephesians 2:8

17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Romans 10:17

A.G.: The Helmet of Salvation

because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 10:9

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9

A.G.: The Sword of the Spirit

24 God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and Truth.

John 4:25

12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 6:12

12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

I Never Knew You

The End Times and The Final Judgment were important topics during Jesus’ Ministry and after, during the Apostles’ ministries. Jesus, in fact, continuously warned the people of His time and ours about the dangers of sin and how it would separate us from God for all Eternity.

Jesus even went as far as to say that He would not only deny us before His Father if we deny Him before men but that He wouldn’t even know us if we chose to live in sin. But what does that mean that He never knew us? What about those who walked away from the Faith? Does that mean they were never truly saved? 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with Him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with Him; if we deny Him, He also will deny us;

2 Timothy 2:10-12

24 Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then He will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’ 26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ 27 But He will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’

Luke 13:24-27

10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with Him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ 12 But He answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

Matthew 25:10-13

What Is The Joy of The LORD?

The Joy of The LORD is our Strength

10 Then he said to them, ‘Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.’

Nehemiah 8:10

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. 11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Psalms 16:10-11

His glory is great through your salvation; splendor and majesty you bestow on him. For You make him most blessed forever; You make him glad with the joy of Your presence. For the king trusts in the Lord, and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved.

I Will Give You Rest, But When?

The world seems to be falling straight into the trap prophesied by Paul 2,000 years ago. Even though the world seems to be hopeless, he still implores us to continue to not grow weary of doing good. But why? Join ArieRashelle as she explains why we must continue to do good, even though everything seems hopeless, in our latest video, I Will Give You Rest, But When?

Galatians 6:7-10
2 Thessalonians 3:13
Matthew 11:28-30
Hebrews 12:1-3
Matthew 11:29-30
John 16:33
2 Corinthians 4:8-18
Revelation 21:3-4

Jesus promised that He would give us rest. He gave us this promise over 2,000 years ago, yet we’re still running a race, according to Paul. So when will we have this rest? Paul even goes on to write to Timothy that difficult times are up ahead.

For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Galatians 6:8-10

1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

2 Timothy 3:1-5

Don’t grow weary of doing good, for every good seed you are planting today will bear fruit tomorrow.

More Verses on When God Will Give Us Rest

Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. For we who have believed enter that rest, as He has said,

“As I swore in my wrath,
‘They shall not enter my rest,’”

although His works were finished from the foundation of the world.

Hebrews 4:1-3

45 Then He came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.”

Matthew 26:45

Now is not the time for rest. Now is the time for spiritual warfare. Yes, Jesus is on His throne. Yes, Jesus has overcome the world, but we still have work to do. We still have to fight our loved ones. We still have to fight for the lost. Look at what Jesus says,

We must work the works of Him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

John 9:4-5

Jesus lives in and through every Christ-Following Christian. As long as there are Christians on this earth, there is light. As long as there is light, there is day. Therefore, we must work while we can. Jesus is coming back soon, and when He does, there will no longer be time for anyone to work. When Jesus comes back, He is taking His bride with Him into their Eternal Rest. Will you be one of them?
